Labor Day Weekend at Old Sturbridge Village 8/30/2008 - 8/31/2008
The last weekend of August is Labor Day weekend. OSV brings a family fun weekend, with a focus on fun and games of early New England and other activities. On Aug. 31, the popular children's television characters "Arthur" and "Word Girl" will appear throughout the day as part of the family fun day honoring Public Broadcasting System member stations. During the full day-long schedule (9:30am to 5:00pm), family-friendly activities are planned along with "make-and-take" crafts. As part of the celebration, members of the PBS member stations, WGBH-Boston and WGBY-Springfield, will receive free OSV admission for up to five people. The day's events are open to the general public as well. Visitors to OSV can enjoy 1830's-style base-ball, French and English tug-of-war, family plowing with the village oxen, hoop races, songs, stories, dancing, toy balloon flights and musket demonstrations. For nine months of the Civil War, Francis D. Lincoln led a company in eastern North Carolina. During this period, he and his wife, Rebecca, produced a rich correspondence that described both the miliary life and that on the home front. When their letters were discovered at Hitchcock Academy (Route 20, Brimfield, MA), local residents Larry & Kitty Lowenthal compiled and edited them as a book, "Trying To Do My Duty". This walk visits the exterior of the Lincoln home and places around the common that were important to the Lincolns. The walk starts at the Hitchcock Academy parking lot on the corner of Route 20 and Brookfield Road in Brimfield, MA at 1:00pm. ** Dogs are permitted on this walk - Bring fiendly, vaccinated dogs ONLY on this walk. Experience new, easy-to-handle hiking trails throughout historic Heins Farm and look back in history to see the last remains of the Old Worcester-Stafford Turnpike (1810 - 1835). The trail is 2 miles long and hilly.
